On January 2, 2008, the government of Sri Lanka made a decision to abrogate the ceasefire agreement (CFA) signed in 2002 between the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Ealam (LTTE). After two weeks, on the 16th of January, this decision came into effect and the CFA was officially terminated, throwing the country back into the era of civil war both in name and reality.
Since then, the armed conflict between both parties has reportedly been intensifying, with suicide bombing attacks and air-raids generating civilian casualties, in the capital of Colombo and other parts of the country.
IMADR issued a statement expressing its deep regret on the Sri Lankan government's abrogation of the CFA, calling the SLG to recommence negotiations with the LTTE, and calling on both parties to refrain from violent retaliations. The statement also calls on the international community to put diplomatic pressure on the parties to resolve the conflict.
