IMADR’s consultative status with UN ECOSOC to be upgraded to “special status”

On January 27, 2009, the United Nations Committee on NGOs in New York approved IMADR’s request to the UN for reclassification from “roster” to “special consultative status.” The “special status” for IMADR will be officially conferred by the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) in July 2009. The special consultative status will allow IMADR to expand its activities at the UN, for instance, circulating statements at meetings of ECOSOC and its subsidiary bodies.

IMADR acquired “roster” status in 1993, which was early for a Japan-based NGO. It was one of the first Japan-based NGOs to acquire a consultative status with the UN. Thereafter, the requirements to acquire consultative status were eased, amid the trend to encourage civil society access to the UN, and more NGOs came to acquire the current “special status.”

IMADR will continue to utilize the UN human rights mechanism, by making effective use of this “special status,” especially by its Geneva office.
